As representatives for Chemwatch here in Western Australia we are regularly asked to conduct chemical inventories and hazardous substance reviews for our clients. These inspections and audits constantly expose issues and weaknesses in relation to chemicals within the organisation.
Recently, there has been a spate of several high profile chemical explosions around the globe which has brought to our attention. Recent chemical explosions have in such place as;
- Toledo, Ohio (August 18, 2026)
- Imatra, Finland (August 17, 2026
- Rotterdam, Netherlands (August 13, 2026)
- Campbellfield, Melbourne (June 9, 2026)
- Longview, Washington (May 26, 2026)
Most of these incidents have caused several casualties /fatalities, destruction of property and local environmental damage etc. Not to mention reputational damage with a loss of:
- Trust
- Credibility
- Operational failures
- Financial los
- Prosecution
- Increased scrutiny etc.
These incidents can also cause long term damage to the local environment and communities! It is extremely important to have a robust chemical management process in place (regardless of whether the chemicals are hazardous, dangerous or not!) A quick response, clear communication and regular robust monitoring should be in place for all locations where chemicals are stored.
So, have you reviewed your chemical management practices lately?
If you haven’t and would like some assistance, do not hesitate to get in contact with us! As we’d love to help
